Roger Curel-Sylvestre was born in Cavaillon, France in 1884 . By 1909 he was living and working in Rome. In 1919 he travelled to American with his American wife and children, eventually coming to Old Lyme, Connecticut where he worked on and off until 1930 when he returned to France. In 1937 he lived briefly in Canada with one of his daughters, but returned to France shortly before his death in 1938.

He occupied a barn studio at the Old Lyme Inn and especially enjoyed painting winter scenes.
